Built for scale: How Writer defined enterprise AI in 2024
2024 was a landmark year at Writer. We expanded our product capabilities, grew our team, and doubled down on our commitment to solve the biggest challenges enterprises face with AI today: low accuracy, low adoption, and low efficiency.
We didn’t just launch a series of incremental tools or roll out upgrades to make folks more productive. We built with intention, redefining what AI can achieve in the enterprise with a full-stack approach. Every model release, integration, and breakthrough was a deliberate step toward empowering the world’s most ambitious organizations to harness AI at scale.
As we close out the year, I’m incredibly energized about what’s next. We’ve got some big goals — create entirely new ways of working, transform industries, and address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
But before we charge ahead, I want to reflect on the groundwork we laid in 2024 and how this critical architecture will lead us to the next era of enterprise AI.
Relentless innovation in AI
Since 2020, we’ve focused on productizing every breakthrough in transformer technology into real enterprise solutions. This year, we added to our family of industry-leading Palmyra models, purpose-built to deliver the precision and accuracy required of a production-ready system:
- Palmyra X 004, our latest frontier model with state-of-the-art reasoning.
- Palmyra Creative for enhancing creative thinking and writing.
- Palmyra Fin and Med, domain-specific models for the highly-regulated healthcare and financial services industries.
- Palmyra Vision, our multimodal LLM with advanced image and video processing.
With partners like AWS, NVIDIA, and Hugging Face, we’ve brought these state-of-the-art LLMs to millions of users.
The next frontier? More efficient models capable of autonomous actions. With the release of our latest top-benchmarked LLM, Palmyra X 004, we’re on our way there. Palmyra 004 is also the first model of its size to be trained on synthetic data and developed at a fraction of the cost compared to major AI labs, setting a new benchmark for innovation in enterprise AI.
We also introduced our breakthrough inference pattern, Writing in the Margins, designed to tackle the “lost in the middle” problem when navigating and extracting meaning from massive amounts of data. This approach guides LLMs to the most relevant data, cutting through the noise of long inputs to deliver greater accuracy and coherence.
And we’re not stopping here. We shared a peek into our early thinking on a new transformer architecture that we’re developing — self-evolving models. This approach will allow LLMs to identify and learn new information in real time, adapting to changing circumstances without requiring a full retraining cycle.
Redefining enterprise-grade accuracy and transparency
Even the best LLMs alone aren’t enough to deliver ROI in the enterprise. They’re just one piece of what it takes to get to quality and efficiency in AI applications and agents. Enterprises need business logic and contextual understanding, the too-often-overlooked “last mile” in AI adoption.
That’s why, two years ago, we introduced graph-based RAG to our platform, transforming how enterprises integrate their existing company knowledge into generative AI solutions. This year, we took it a major step further. In an industry-first move, we embedded graph-based RAG directly into our chat apps, enabling enterprises to get real-time, contextually aware responses with greater accuracy and depth. AI guardrails ensure outputs reflect your brand identity, meet compliance standards, and align with your style guidelines.
We also introduced advanced explainability features like “chain of thought” reasoning, giving teams a clear view of how AI arrives at answers. Customers can now understand which data sources power responses, fine-tune inquiries, and ensure compliance with greater oversight. By knowing why and how those answers are reached, we’re helping users scale AI with confidence.
Transforming AI apps and workflows
Generic chat apps might boost individual productivity, but they can’t solve high-impact business problems at scale. To transform mission-critical workflows, companies need to build sophisticated, customized AI apps and agents powered by LLMs.
But for most companies, building these tools is inefficient. It requires long development cycles, competing for limited roadmap space, and endless rewrites. This painstaking process has left few apps in production, and even fewer delivering real value.
This year, we changed the game with the launch of Writer’s AI Studio, a suite of new developer tools that make it fast and simple for anyone to create custom AI apps and workflows. AI Studio empowers the people closest to the problems to build the solutions themselves — whether they’re using our no-code tools, the Writer Framework, or the Writer API.
We also made team collaboration even easier with our Slack integration, bringing your customized, AI-powered chat apps directly to where teams work every day.
Momentum that drives us forward
2024 wasn’t just about scaling our platform, it was about scaling our impact. We grew our team to 300 people, deepened our vertical depth, expanded our bench with three C-suite executives, and doubled down on building our award-winning culture. Our core values — Connect, Challenge, and Own — earned us a spot on Inc.’s 2024 Best Workplaces list.
We empowered over 250 enterprise customers to scale their mission-critical generative AI initiatives — we racked up serious miles traveling across the globe, meeting face-to-face with global leaders from T-Mobile, Hilton, Mars, L’Oréal, Uber, and more to help them build powerful apps that drive real ROI. We also brought some of the most forward-thinking minds together to define what the next era of work will look like at our AI Leaders Forums in New York, London, and San Francisco.
Plus, we reimagined what it means to be a builder. We launched Writer AI Academy as the go-to hub for anyone looking to become an AI expert, helping people learn to build no-code apps in AI Studio or learn skills like crafting generative AI prompts. No-code users, developers, and API power-users alike are deploying customized AI apps that drive real business impact — all in minutes, not months.
Our momentum didn’t go unnoticed. In November, we raised our Series C — a testament to the transformative architecture we’re building —with new strategic investors like Salesforce, Adobe, IBM, and Workday. This round will be instrumental as we build more mission-critical workflows and bring powerful agentic capabilities to our platform.
And just this week, Writer was named as an Emerging Leader in the 2024 Gartner Innovation Guide for Generative AI Technologies, the only enterprise AI platform to place in the top right quadrant in all three of categories: Generative AI Model Providers, Generative AI Engineering, and AI Knowledge Management Apps / General Productivity. We also placed among the highest generative AI model providers for Future Potential, ahead of nearly every tech giant — a nod to our innovative full-stack approach.
But this is just the start. The pace of AI innovation today isn’t only unprecedented, it’s rewriting the rules of what technology can do. We’ve set our sights on transforming the future of work — and we’re on our way.
